Tobacco jar, made in memory of the award on 26 January 1787 by the Académie Royale et Patriotique van Valence, of a prize of honor to Adriaan Paets van Troostwijk (1752-1837) and Cornelis Kraijenhoff (1758-1840), Johannes Schiotling, 1787 Canvas Print
The square pot has a loose lid and an inner lid made of silver-plated metal with a silver knob. The pot rests on a widened, straight-walled base with an imposed, stepped bottom edge, which is supported by four cast feet. The legs have a right angle and a wavy contour on the inside, ending in volutes. The contour of the feet is continued in the wall of the base, inside this wall is openwork with latticework of arches with rosettes. The body is closed at the top by a widened rim that corresponds to the base, above which a recessed mouth rim. Top along the base, below along the top edge and along the corners of the part in between are beaded frames. The walls of the legs, base and top edge are decorated in gloss stitch with fields with geometric edges. The four sides of the pot are all inscribed with an oval field within a rectangle that has a border of laurel leaves on two opposite sides (A and C), and on the other two (B and D) a culot in each corner, always on a shaded background. The oval fields are all engraved with a text or a representation: on A: VALENTIAE DELPHINORUM/Societati Regiae/Quae/A. PAETS van TROOSTWYK/et /CRT KRAYENHOFF. CJ FIL./Praemio Ornavit/ MDCCLXXXVII [in memory of the Royal Academy of Valence in the Dauphiné, which A. Paets van Troostwijk and CRT Krayenhoff CJ son presented with a prize, 1787]; on B: A snake-wrapped torch against the background of a dark cloudy sky with lightning bolts; on C: The coat of arms of the region Dauphiné [afterwards the Drôme], crowned with the French royal crown, in front of crossed palm branches; op D: A landscape during a thunderstorm, with houses and a church where lightning strikes and a fallen haystack under a destroyed roof. The flat bottom edge of the lid is slightly recessed in relation to the mouth edge. A pearl rim runs over it, as well as over the four corners of the domed, rejuvenating lid. Its four walls are decorated with fields as on the legs, the base and the top rim of the pot. The slightly raised top is also surrounded by a pearl frame. The molded knob in the form of a round, profiled vase with lid rests on this top. The body of the vase is decorated with three laurel wreaths hanging from nails, the lid has a convex knob around which a radiating wreath of leaves. The knob of the flat, square inner lid is shaped like a pine cone.
