Triumph of love, Philips Galle, c. 1565 Canvas Print
Cupid is enthroned on a victory chariot. His car carries Jupiter, the prototype of the adulterer and conqueror. In front of the chariot are classical poets who wrote about love: Marcellus, Ovid and Tibullus. Next to the chariot are victims of love: Solomon, Hercules, Piramus and Thisbe. The procession is on its way to the temple of the love goddess Venus, on the left in the background. The print has a Latin caption and is part of the series about the triumphs of Petrarch.
