Triumphal chariot with War (Bellum), Cornelis Cort, 1564 Canvas Print
A man with a lightning bolt and sword in his hand, the personification of war, drives on a triumphal chariot past a burning city. Behind the wagon, soldiers and prisoners walk in. Next to the car are other personifications, such as Slander and Hunger. At the feet of War kneels the personification of poverty (Inopia), which is mistakenly called Humilitas (Humility) on the print. Print from a series of nine prints with triumphal chariots from the Antwerp Circumcision tour of 1561. The personifications on the cars together represent the cycle of human action.
