View of Haarlem, Jan van de Velde (II), 1726 - 1750 Canvas Print
View of Haarlem, seen from the north. At the top left a cloud containing the coat of arms of Haarlem with motto (Vicit Vim Virtus), carried by two tritons. To the right of it the coat of arms of the county of Holland. The buildings (Sint-Bavokerk in the middle) are equipped with numbers. Bottom left, on a stone, the names of the buildings in question in a legend 1-23. At the top of the middle a cloud with the personifications of Caution (left) and Force (right). Between the personifications a barren tree containing five coats of arms, including that of Haarlem, and two bells (the 'clocks of Damiate' or 'Damiaatjes'). Under the tree a boat with a saw on the bow. This performance refers to the conquest of Damiate. To the right of the middle cloud the coat of arms of Maurits van Oranje. At the top right a cloud containing a coat of arms with a barren tree (reference to the Haarlemmerhout), carried by two hairy wild men. At the bottom right a cartouche with the assignment in Latin. In the foreground on the left a shepherd with a herd of cows at the ruin of Huis ter Kleef and in the middle a draughtsman. On the second plan carriages, riders and walkers.
