Village view with recruiting voices, Charles Grignion (I), 1758 Canvas Print
Village view with three inns. At the heart of the performance, two competing politicians try to brim a farmer with money and an invitation to dinner at the inn. The candidate on the left invites him to the 'Whig' inn 'The Crown', and the candidate on the right for dinner at the Tories in inn 'Royal Oak'. Above them hangs a canvas that says 'Punch Candidate for Guzzledown', on which a candidate empties the treasury to buy votes. Here is also the signboard of The Royal Oak with the portrait of Charles II. In the background, a crowd of Tories is busy knocking down the signboard of The Crown. Under the crown on the sign is 'The Excise Office', referring to Robert Walpole's 'Excise Bill' of 1733. On the left sit two veterans in front of the 'Portobello' inn, referring to the Battle of Porto Bello of 1739. On the right, an innkeeper counts her money. She sits on the British lion, which eats a French lily. The woman is viewed by an English soldier in the doorway.
