Virgin and Child, Antonio Rizzo, c. 1465 - c. 1470 Canvas Print
Round relief with Mary standing behind a plinth, on which stands the child Jesus, which is presented by her to the viewer by the gesture of her right hand. Jesus holds his mother's left hand and makes a blessing gesture with his right arm and hand, which qualifies him as Salvator. In the background, an angel floats on a cloud; the rest of the background consists of horizontal, stripe-shaped cloud formations. The whole is framed by an inner edge of wide lying beads, always interspersed with two flat, standing beads; around it a frieze of switched palmettes. The rear plane runs away slightly deepened within this frame upwards, resulting in an enhanced perspective effect of the tondo. At the back, the tondo is done with a concave profile and a bead frame. The side is rough-cut, the back flat sawn.
