Virgin of the Apocalypse, Mattheus van Beveren, c. 1680 - c. 1690 Canvas Print
Mary stands on the left leg above the globe on the crescent moon, with the right knee bent forward. The head is used to the left, the left shoulder deviates backwards; the left foot trams the snake, the right one on the crescent moon, is slightly on the side and turned outwards. On her left hand sits the slightly bent over Christ child, who raises his hands forward and which she protects from falling with the fingertips of the right hand. A slip of the cloth, on which the child sits, lies over the legs and is lifted by Mary's index finger. Mary's separated hair, which is absorbed in braids at the temples, meets partially on the back of the head in a wrenk, then falls in waves on the right shoulder and shows a string of beads with a large pearl from the front. Over a thin robe, the sleeves of which end in finely pleated, wider flared cuffs, lies the spacious, left-rear fluttering cloak, which is struck to the right and incorporated over the left arm, making part of the robe at the feet visible again. The winding snake under her foot looks up to the child with her mouth open, its raised tail ends in an arrow.
