Walvis, washed ashore on 13 January 1601 at Beverwijk, Jan Saenredam, 1618 Canvas Print
Whale (sperm whale), washed up on 13 January 1601 at Beverwijk. In the foreground Count Ernst Casimir of Nassau, the painter with a paper in hand with his drawing, a crowd of spectators and in the background on the left the sea; on the right the beach with cars and people. At the top, the head of the whale can be seen from two sides. In between, an assignment in Latin to Count Ernst Casimir by Saenredam, and the darkened sun and moon. Among them an earthquake and death that shoots an arrow at the Amsterdam Virgin as an allusion to the horrors that were expected by the arrival of the whale. In the caption a 32-line verse in Latin.
