Woman makes a sand painting, Kunisada (I) , Utagawa, 1820 Canvas Print
A seated woman (actor Segawa Kikunojô V (1802-32) in an unknown female role), makes a sand painting on a sheet of lacquerwork. Next to the painting are two spoons and a wooden spatula and on the far left a lacquer box. The painting represents Mount Fuji, seen from the beach of Matsu no Shimabara. The cloud next to Fuji, in the shape of a dragon, refers to the new year of the dragon. Making sand paintings was a popular pastime for women from the 20s of the nineteenth century, perhaps even before. With two poems.
