Woman with demon mask between the clouds, Kunisada (I) , Utagawa, 1833 Canvas Print
A female demon, disguised as a beautiful lady, holds a demon mask on a rainy night. The woman is played by actor Segawa Kikunojô V (1802-32) in the kabuki play Modoribashi. This play is based on the Nôh play 'Rashômon', in which a man ,Watanabe no Tsuna, meets a woman at the Ichijô Modori bridge. He recognizes the woman as a demon and when she tries to kidnap him he cuts off her arm, after which she flies away. This is the upper leaf of a vertical diptych. With one poem.
