Wells with stairs are a well-known tradition in Indian architecture. Such wells were built by the rulers in the arid parts of western India, such as Gujarat and Rajasthan. In the photo, three women can be seen in traditional sari with water jugs. The well of Adalaj is located near Ahmedabad in the province of Gujarat and was built in 1498 by Queen Rudadevi in memory of Rana Veer Singh.
