Woollen Caps Worn by Dutch Whalers, anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1800 Canvas Print

Hat with ear flaps, finely knitted from brown wool, with motif of red squares and a blue pillow print. Catalogue p.108: "In four graves, according to the excavator, a pillow, whether or not filled with feathers, was present under the head. The cushion outlines were made of plant material, which had decayed so much that the cushions could not be salvaged. Only in one grave were prints visible on the back of a cap of narrow light and dark stripes, which together form a diamond-shaped pattern. These prints could come from a pillow circumference, which itself has perished, but whose paint of the stripes has yielded on the hat". The inner hat is finely knitted and light brown in color. Knitted in tricot stitch. Sewn together in two parts. These parts are cut at the top and sewn in.
